I loved the idea to work on all sorts of ideas: So I went on to study Computer Science in college. I really hated the feeling of being mediocre. But I still loved making concepts of new digital products though, so as years went along I became more uncertain and nervous about my future. Luckily, my life path changed during my college internship as a developer at Twoo, a dating website.
Nearing the end of the internship, it was time for an evaluation talk. However, when they explained it to me, it sounded exactly what I wanted to do. Come up with ideas, new features, conceptualise them, even start designing them, work out ecosystems and more. I was grateful and still am at the people that saw something in me back then, even though I studied something completely different.
I was happy and they were to.

By Jim Ferri Despite it being one of the most popular and beautiful countries in Europe, Belgium confuses many travelers. Dumon Artisanale Chocolatier, Bruges The crux of the problem, as it often is, is political. The country is divided into two ethnic regions, Dutch-speaking Flanders to the north and French-speaking Wallonia to the south.
An imaginary east-west line that bisects the country at Brussels, divides the two regions. Consequently, Brussels is a city claimed by both the Flemish and the Walloons. Just forget the politics.

Gallia Belgica was the Romans’ name for the northern part of Gaul, the northern limit of their empire. In early modern times, the name was used as an erudite synonym for the Low Countries. After the revolution and the establishment of an independent kingdom, Belgium became the official name of the country.
The country is located at the western end of the northern European plain, covering an area of 11, square miles 30, square kilometers ; the neighboring states are France, Luxembourg, Germany, and the Netherlands. The two main rivers are the Schelde and the Meuse, both of which begin in France and flow toward the Netherlands. The land rises progressively toward the south. But once I have spent a little more time in delightful Ghent — with its pretty, winding canal-side pathways, immaculately preserved medieval buildings and a public transport system that would keep even the most avid petrolhead off the road — I begin to understand the sheer pleasure that can be had by traversing the city at a leisurely pace.
And, as it quickly becomes clear, Ghent has plenty to offer someone whose preferred mode of transport is two feet. I am keen to discover the historical, cultural and culinary highlights of Ghent, so I spend my first morning in the company of Leen, who takes me on her Yummy Walk vizit. Ghent has plenty to offer on two feet We begin in Kouter, a grand square, that has for centuries been the meeting place for both working people and the bourgeoisie of the city, and was the original site, in , for the now famous annual Ghent festival.
In Belgium, however, I learned of tacit and explicit “rules and regulations” for interracial mixing. Religion, in addition to economic and class demarcations, were the factors impeding and sustaining most interracial relationships in Belgium.
Many of these fiefdoms were united in the Burgundian Netherlands of the 14th and 15th centuries. The latter were ruled successively by the Spanish Spanish Netherlands and the Austrian Habsburgs Austrian Netherlands and comprised most of modern Belgium. This was the theatre of most Franco-Spanish and Franco-Austrian wars during the 17th and 18th centuries. The reunification of the Low Countries as the United Kingdom of the Netherlands occurred at the dissolution of the First French Empire in , after the defeat of Napoleon.
Independent Belgium Episode of the Belgian Revolution of , by Gustaf Wappers In , the Belgian Revolution led to the separation of the Southern Provinces from the Netherlands and to the establishment of a Catholic and bourgeois, officially French-speaking and neutral, independent Belgium under a provisional government and a national congress.
The main political parties of the 19th century were the Catholic Party and the Liberal Party , with the Belgian Labour Party emerging towards the end of the 19th century. French was originally the single official language adopted by the nobility and the bourgeoisie. It progressively lost its overall importance as Dutch became recognized as well. This recognition became official in and in the parliament accepted a Dutch version of the Constitution. In , this outcry led the Belgian state to assume responsibility for the government of the colony, henceforth called the Belgian Congo.
The opening months of the war were known as the Rape of Belgium due to German excesses.
These and more are the things to deal with when falling in love with a Belgian man. Kissing… the relatives A relationship with a Belgian guy needs to be quite settled before you meet his parents. But even though it takes a long time before you meet the future in-laws, you will need to kiss them many times when you do. Like 3 times on the cheeks when you first arrive and again when you leave.

When Sint-Salvator was founded in the 10th century, it was just a common parish church. At the end of the 18th century, the French inhabitants of Bruges threw out the bishop and destroyed the Sint-Donatius Church, his residence. In , shortly after Belgium’s independence in , a new bishop was installed in Bruges and the Sint-Salvator church obtained the status of cathedral.
However, the building didn’t really look like a cathedral. It was a lot smaller and less imposing than the nearby Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk and had to be adapted to its new role. For instance, a higher and more impressive tower was needed. The oldest surviving part, dating from the end of the 12th century, formed the base of the mighty tower. In a fire destroyed the roof of the cathedral.
William Chantrell, an English architect, famous for his neo-Gothic restorations of English churches, was asked to restore to Sint-Salvator its former glory. At the same time he was authorized to make a project for a higher tower, in order to make it taller than that of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk. Instead of adding a Neo-Gothic tower extension, Chantrell chose a very personal Romanesque design. After completion there was a lot of criticism and the royal commission for monuments, without authorization by Chantrell, had placed a small peak on top of the tower because the original design was deemed too flat.

The French, who professed to have entered the country to deliver the Belgians form the yoke of tyranny and to liberate them, in reality gave themselves up to such pillaging and extortion that, as a Brussels magistrate said, they left the inhabitants nothing but their eyes to weep with. After this, in alleged compliance with the express wish of the Belgians, who as a matter of fact had not been consulted, a decree of the Convention, dated 1 October, , proclaimed the annexation of the Belgian provinces to France.
At the beginning of the French rule, which was to last twenty years , religious conditions were not identical in the annexed countries. Religion was deeply rooted in what had formerly been the Austrian Netherlands. They had revolted in against the reforms of Joseph II , which were inspired by the spirit of sophistry. Jansenism, Febronianism, and Josephinism had gained but few partisans there; the University of Louvain was a bulwark of Catholic orthodoxy ; even the Vonckist party, which in had been clamouring for political reforms, showed great respect for religion and had taken as its motto Pro aris et focis.
But the French Government soon caused these local differences to be lost sight of in the common hatred of the foreign oppressor. The Directory began by enforcing, one after another, the French revolutionary laws concerning monastic orders and public worship in Belgium. Religious houses, except those devoted to teaching or to the care of the sick, were suppressed; it was forbidden to wear an ecclesiastical garb; the clergy were forced to publish a declaration recognizing the people of France as the sovereign authority, and promising submission and obedience to the laws of the Republic; the communes were forbidden to contribute to the expenses of public worship and every external symbol of religion was prohibited.
The Belgians stood firm, and the elections of the fifth year having shown an undeniable reaction of public opinion against the revolutionary spirit, the clergy appealed to the Five Hundred Cinq Cents to demand a suspension of the declaration until a papal decision should be received settling the question its licitness. In the meanwhile, the priests who had not made the declaration continued to exercise their priestly functions in the Belgian provinces, and the tribunal of La Dyle acquitted those who were brought before it.
At this juncture, Camille Jordan made a favourable report to the Cinq Cents on the clergy’s request, and thus the Belgians had the honour of changing the current of French legislation for the better. The victorious conspirators dismissed many Belgians who had been elected, and the elections of the sixth year, conducted under the violent pressure of republican deputies, gave the Government the wished-for results.
